AFGHAN RUGS

Here, at the heart of the silk road, is where the art of hand made wool rugs really began. The most valuable rugs ever made, the great designs of the Persian moguls, came from the weavers in these mountain villages. The wool for our Afghani rugs comes from sheep who live at high altitudes, so it has a lot of the same qualities as Himalayan wool.

Our Hazara weavers in Bamiyan province use a Turkish knot. It’s a versatile and traditional knot that works beautifully with virtually any design from classic to modern. In the North, we use the more classic Persian knot, sometimes called a “Senneh loop”. Its asymmetry allows for more graceful curves in intricate designs.

so it has a lot of the same qualities as Himalayan wool. But the weaving and knotting techniques here produce rugs that are thinner and lighter weight than Tibetan rugs. These rugs display nuanced color shifts within the yarn – a sought after quality known as abrash. Hand spun wool produces yarn with natural variations in thickness. The thinner yarns absorb more dye so the colors in each rug have subtle differences in saturation and depth that make it one of a kind.

Hand made wool rugs are among the most sustainable products on earth. The wool comes from sheep herds that have thrived for centuries, and the finishing process uses vegetal dyes from renewable resources.
